There are no formal "standards" as such, only basic principles of good
practice flowing from Freeman Tilden et al. A recent and excellent addition
to the literature is Stacy Roth's "Historical Character Interpretation",
available from the University of North Carolina Press. You might be better
to address this query to the members of ALHFAM which has a separate
discussion list run by Edward Baker at Mystic Seaport.

As to programs on indigenous peoples, I very much agree that, wherever
possible, THEY should be the ones to do it. I have seen some excellent
examples, particularly the interpretation of the longhouse at Ste. Marie
Among the Hurons in Midland ON; I have also seen interpretation of native
life by native people that was bloody awful interpretation and historically
quite inaccurate, at two sites in Saskatchewan. Standards? What
standards?!!!
