Hi Cynthia,
I graduated from the NYU conservation program in 2000. Conservation
programs require you to have coursework in studio art, art history, and
chemistry. For most people, it is the chemistry requirement that is the
most arduous...you need to take two semesters of organic chemistry with lab.
None of the three major programs in this country (the State of New York
University at Buffalo, Delaware University at Winterthur, or New York
University) will make an exception for that organic chemistry requirement.
If you pursue the NYU program, it is a four year program (the others are
three) and includes a master's degree in art history. For the NYU program,
you must pass reading exams in German and French to graduate. The AIC
website has further information. In a nutshell, if you are serious about
conservation get started with your chemistry coursework right away.

Best of luck to you and feel free to contact me off the list as well.
