Collections Move Assistant

Five temporary full-time positions

Position Summary: The Computer History Museum, located in Mountain View, 
CA, is currently in the process of relocating portions of its collection to a 
storage facility in Milpitas, CA.  We are seeking 5 full-time people to assist in 
this move. 

This unique and exciting institution is home to the largest collection of 
computer related artifacts in the world. The Museum’s vision is to explore the 
computing revolution and its impact on human experience. Backed by leaders 
and innovators of the computer industry, CHM is actively working on exhibits, 
collections, public programs, and special events. 
The Collections Move Assistants will primarily be assigned to work with either 
museum artifacts or the museum’s archival collection. 
&#61607;	The museum artifacts assistants will work on the relocation of the 
Museum’s 20,000 piece hardware and ephemera collection. 
&#61607;	The archival assistants will have primary responsibility for packing, 
database entry for inventory control and box tracking, and some cataloging of 
documents and books in preparation for the move. 
These are temporary positions that are funded for a maximum of three months 
each, starting May or June 2008. The bulk of the work will take place in our 
Mountain View location but reliable transportation is also required for 
necessary work at our Milpitas location. The pay rate is $17 to $19 per hour 
without benefits. The Museum is an equal opportunity employer.

Responsibilities

•	Prepare artifacts for packing and moving
•	Pack and unpack objects that are fragile and irreplaceable without 
damaging them in any way
•	Track objects packed and unpacked
•	Basic supervision of collections volunteers assisting in move 
preparations
•	Database entry
•	Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications, Attributes and Skills  
•	Knowledge of archival principles and practices or experience 
handling museum objects that are delicate, fragile and irreplaceable.
•	Experience working in an archive, library, historical society, 
gallery, or museum; internships will be considered work experience.
•	Experience assisting in artifact care and maintenance or 
manuscript collection care in a museum, gallery, archives or library setting; 
internships will be considered work experience.
•	Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
•	Strong organization skills and the importance of keeping 
collections in a specified order.
•	Detail-oriented and ability to be flexible.
•	Proficiency with Windows and Microsoft office software. 
•	Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
•	Ability to lift and carry 40 pound boxes unassisted.
•	Must be able to climb ladders and step stools in order to remove 
and replace boxes on shelves.
Preferred Qualifications, Attributes and Skills  
•	Masters in Library Science or Museum Studies or a current 
graduate student in Museum Studies or Library Science.
•	Experience working as part of a team in an archival or museum 
move.
