All of what Wesley says is true, except that volunteering or working an
internship does not have to be in an AAM accredited museum. With only
about 10% of all museums in the USA accredited, you would be depriving
yourself of working in some great museums if that was your number one
criteria.

Good luck,

Tim

Volunteering is very important, as well as one (or more) internships, being
exposed to as many museum activities and functions as possible in an AAM
accredited museum. Also, be willing to travel to just about anywhere for
that first internship and that first full-time job.
Persistence is most important attribute to have.
Best Wishes!

You can always volunteer on the weekends at major museums which is a great
first step into networking. I have found that volunteering has paid off
tremendously even if it is only a fw hours a week. I currently work
outside
the museum field but want to eventually work for a museum again and
volunteering at a major art museum on the weekends or on Friday nights has
helped me work toward that goal.

best of luck!
