To add my two cents . . .

Volunteering is important, but BE SPECIFIC about your goals
(employment goal, skills you have, skills you would like,
etc.) when talking to a volunteer coordinator. The point of
volunteering is for both parties to gain something . . . so,
the museum gets unpaid labor; but what do you want/expect?
Volunteers can (and should) ask for a particular department
(collections, education, marketing, etc.). The last thing
most (not all) volunteer coordinators want to hear is, "I'll
do anything." The natural response is: "If you're willing
to do anything, why choose THIS museum?" Of course, museums
do not (usually) have volunteers in all departments, be
understanding if your desired department is not an available
choice.

Hope this helps . . .
