Most of the early 'open-air' museums were, more specifically, the early
museums of folk culture, a museum movement that started in Scandinavia.  In
Europe, they would generally be termed "ecomuseums", a term that doesn't
seem to have penetrated the US, but which would provide a great many
publication references if you researched it.
