I second Jenny's suggestion, and also recommend looking at the National
Park Service's Conserve O Gram series and specifically Number 5/2, which
addresses exactly your concerns.

I would strongly recommend getting a copy of "Storage of Natural History
Collections: Ideas and Practical solutions" by Carolyn L. Rose and Amparo R.
de Torres. They have great instructions on storage of headdresses of
various types.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Storage of Native American headdresses
Can anyone send me instructions or best practices for the storage of
Native American headdresses? We have the personal memorabilia of Bishop W. Angie
Smith in our archives. The collection includes several headdresses that
were presented to him as gifts (he was the Bishop for the Indian Mission of
the Methodist Church from 1943-1968). Please email me directly if more info
is needed.
Thanks, Christina
