Job Responsibilities

Building Preservation & Conservation:

Oversee the care and maintenance of A&L's 12 historic buildings by making repairs; preparing cost estimates; preparing and/or overseeing the preparation of bid documents; locating, vetting, selecting and overseeing the work of appropriate vendors and contractors. 

Inventory and assess building preservation needs. Prioritize building preservation needs by working with the Executive Director, site staff, and consultants, as appropriate. 

Provide an "audit" of the above functions with recommendations for best and most financially viable practices.

Property Management:

Oversee the care and security of A&L's historic properties by ensuring the proper maintenance of building systems (heating, alarm, plumbing, etc.) and the seasonal opening and closing of buildings, by conducting the work, overseeing contractors, and/or working with site staff.

Oversee the care of the grounds of A&L's properties by overseeing contractors and/or hiring and overseeing staff to do snow plowing, grass cutting, and general yard maintenance.

Be "on call" to handle property emergencies. Work with site staff on managing and addressing issues related to A&L's tenants.

Provide an "audit" of the above functions with recommendations for best and most financially viable practices.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum of 15 years experience in restoration carpentry working on historically-significant properties, preferably in a museum setting. Skilled at framing, roofing, finish carpentry, plaster repair, finishing, and interior/exterior painting. Experience with plumbing, HVAC, wiring, and landscaping/yard/tree care.

Knowledge of and experience with accurate estimating, all phases of the contracting process, supervising employees/contractors, and budgeting.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills, ability to self-manage and work as part of a team, pragmatic approach to issues, ability to stay on schedule and on budget with projects, flexibility.

Compensation

Salary range of mid-thirties to low-forties, depending upon experience, with an excellent benefit package including health insurance and employer contribution to retirement plan.
