Museum Operations Internship Program

The Smithsonian American Art Museum invites graduate students and college graduates to participate in our Advanced Level Internship Program in Washington, D.C. This program provides an overview of museum operations, by combining hands-on experience with academic instruction. Students benefit from working directly with Smithsonian museum specialists in areas appropriate to career interests for one or two semesters (fall and/or spring). For 34 years, program alumni, now serving as museum professionals across the U.S. and abroad, have reported substantial career benefits as a result of their SAAM training. Prospective applicants currently enrolled in an academic program and university faculty are encouraged to inquire about our tuition-sharing arrangement, which allows inclusion of this program as a part of their course curriculum. Although the Advanced Level Internship program was originally structured to meet the needs of individuals in art history, American studies, or studio art, students from other disciplines are encouraged to apply due to the field's expansion into areas such as information technologies, business, and financial development. Master's degree candidates are preferred; college graduates whether or not currently enrolled in an academic program will be considered on an individual basis. One monetary award is available for an exceptional graduate student with financial need. Applications are currently being accepted for the fall 2002-spring 2003 program. For more information, contact Judith Houston Hollomon, Intern Program Officer, on (202) 275-1554, or e-mail: [log in to unmask]
