Well, I am working towards my PhD in art education while working full-
time in museum education. It has been difficult time-wise and energy-
wise, but it's been very rewarding to make connections between more
theoretical and more practical work. My work has definitely been
facilitated by a wonderful advisor and department in which many
students work full-time and there is an understanding of what the
implications of that are. I think that the doctorate degree offers
museum professionals the opportunity to develop their own research,
which few of us may have the time and resources to do at work. What
you may want to look for at different departments/schools is the
attitude towards those who work on the doctorates and work full-time
elsewhere and for yourself what your committment level and intellectual
curiosity is pointing you towards.

hope this helps, Meryl Zwanger
