Contact the New York Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation
for guidance (http://nysparks.com/shpo/) if you haven't already. This is
something that they've plenty of experience in dealing with and can advise
you and the homeowners on the best way to preserve the house against
undesirable changes using easements and other legal tools.
