Robin, I am also an anthropology student interested in doing visitor
evaluation work. Let me recommend some of the following:

www.ilinet.org - Institute for Learning Innovation, a not-for-profit
evaluation group with some interesting approaches to the idea of "free-
choice learning." They have published two books.

www.randikorn.com - Randi Korn & Associates, an evaluation firm in Virginia

Serrell, Beverly. Paying Attention: Visitors and Museum Exhibitions.
Washington, D.C.: American Association of Museums, 1997. (I have not seen
this book, but her label-writing book is so cool this is probably also
good)

Some official materials off the IMLS website that I haven't read in depth
(they're on my list to read):

A list of evaluation links compiled by Harry Needham, a member of this list-
-which I found by accident. Harry, you should really do a better job of
self promotion!

You can also order reports from the Smithsonian's Institutional Studies
Office for free, although they have a rather *different* approach to
evaluation.

As an anthropologist, you might enjoy contacting Richard Handler, who did
an ethnography of Colonial Williamsburg (he's at UVa). Very few
anthropologists seem to have done a lot with evaluation.

Robin, what is the e-mail address or URL for this listserv you mention?
Also, if you contact me off-list, I have the e-mail addresses of a couple
other people you might contact. I would be interested in hearing about
your work and talking to you about doing the kind of work you're doing at
UBC--I've heard good things have been coming out of there.
