Dear Museum Listserv Members,
Thanks to the many of you who suggested ways to lead a mixed group of
children through an art museum. The trip was this morning and it went
swimmingly. I decided to focus on symbols and had the kids go on a scavenger
hunt to find certain items (a bird, a palm branch, etc.) in the paintings
and then we went back and talked about them. I have to share one "funny"
that brought a chuckle to my day: I had just finished explaining how the
Catholic church had been one of the primary patrons of Renaissance art,
which is why many of the works we were looking at had subjects from the
Bible, when one little six year old tugged at my pant leg and asked,
wide-eyed and completely earnestly, "Is that why some of the paintings are
so SCARY?" :)

All the best,
Reagan Duplisea
