Actually, the 1023 is the application for recognition of exemption (tax-exempt
status), not nonprofit status. In order to become a nonprofit you will have to
contact your state government (most likely the secretary of state's office)
and incorporate as a nonprofit corporation, trust or association. Then you can
proceed to adopt bylaws. Once you have both of those documents, you can
proceed with filing the 1023 to apply for tax-exempt status.
