Glad you like the approach.

Look at how much I've educated you this week, LOL.
First you found out you have culture. Now you find
out you're a PWD! Wait til I tell you you might have
been a TAB!

The concept on PWD is the emphasis on People first.
As you well know, but some in our society fail to
recognize, the emphasis is on being a person and not
something considered an aberration. We emphasize our
humanity before all else.

Now most people, though certainly not all, start out
as TABs. That stands for Temporarily Able Bodieds. A
good number of us start out at TABs, but life and age
and accident can change that in the blink of an eye.
With an aging Boomer population, it behooves a lot
more of us to pay attention to and protect laws
targeted to give equal access to the PWD, especially
as it relates to employment.

What PWD want is the ability to be able to work and be
self-sufficient and not on the public dole. And, as
you are probably cognizant, according to those who
provide consulting services, most accommodations cost
less than $500 and can be used for multiple PWD.

And, for the record, my particular emphasis is on
invisible-disabilities, especially those related to
mental health. Goodness knows there has been an
overabundance of bizarre stigma in that regard.

Finally, I suspect many of you will catch the new
flick "I Am Sam" starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Sean
Penn about a mentally retarded father in a custody
battle to retain his young daughter.

If the movie inspires and educates you at all, please
consider to do what I've done the last seven years,
volunteer for your local Special Olympics. I have
been the announcer twice yearly since I first got
involved, and it is one of the most rewarding
experiences I have ever had. Though we have none in
our family who would need such services, it is a
remarkable, remarkable experience.

More TABs should try half as hard and consistently as
those in Special O and, if we all even demonstrated
even a quarter of the team spirit these athletes have,
the world would be a much better place.

To locate a Special O near you, go here:

If you'd like to know more about accessibility, we
have an EXCELLENT consultant on list, Terrie Nolinske,
who I am sure, would be more than happy to discuss
with you ways you can make your museum more
accessible.
