Descansando Para La Jornada: Resting for the Journey

 The Western Museums
Association is pleased to invite all members of the museum community to its 2002 annual meeting, Descansando Para La
Jornada: Resting for the Journey, September 11 – 15, 2002 in Tucson,
Arizona. The conference theme is a metaphor for professional growth, restoration, and rejuvenation. Sessions address the challenge of museum professionals to renew and inspire themselves,
as well as our visitors and to prepare for changes in professional careers,
programs, and institutions. Conference programs will be sent to all WMA
 members
in late April, 2002 and copies will be available at the WMA booth at the AAM
conference in Dallas. Non-members who want to be added to the conference
 program
mailing list should email [log in to unmask] or call (510)
 238-9700,
or check to website at www.westmuse.org.

 The conference takes place at
one of the most beautiful hotels in the country, the La Paloma Resort, at the
foot of Tucson’s breathtaking Catalina Mountain Range. The hotel rates are a
reasonable $135 per night (includes all resort amenities including spa robes
 and
Starbucks coffee in the rooms!) The cost of early bird conference registration

for WMA member is $190 for three full days of sessions. In addition the
 program
includes a fourth day of pre-conference workshops and four evening events
including a visit to the Tucson Museum of Art and the spectacular Arizona
 Sonoran Desert.

 In addition to theme related
sessions like “Keeping Your Job Fresh,” “Moving Up and Beyond:
Rejuvenation and the Job,” “Interpreting Spirituality,” “Juggling Jobs and
Family Without Dropping the Ball,” and “Out of the Spotlight, Into
the Shadows: Staff Retreats,” conference sessions also include practical
job-related topics like “Making the Grade: New Developments in After-School
 Programming,” “Designing For Universal
Access: A Case Study In Creating A New Exhibition,” “Implementing a Successful

Intern Program,” “Insurance: It Ain’t What it Used to Be,” “A Circle of Peers:

Marketing Roundtables and How They Work,” “A Governance Partnership: Staff
 &
Board Assessment Initiatives,” “Creating a Buzz: Rethinking Your Museum’s
 Public
Relations Strategies,” “Preparing for the Journey: Strategic Planning for the
Small Museum,” “Setting the Example: Environmentally Friendly Museums,” “Build
Your Skills to Secure Major Gifts,” and
 “The
Material has a Message: Spot Tests for Registrars and Collections
 Managers.”
