The Cappon House Museum in Holland Michigan is a beautiful Victorian house museu
m. The interpretive period is 1874-1902. The original owner, Holland's first
mayor, had the home built after the fire in 1871 which destroyed almost the
entire town (same weekend as the Chicago fire). He died in 1902, hence the
time frame for the interpretation. The house stayed in the family until it
was sold to the city for use as a museum. The contents were deeded to the city
which enabled the pretty accurate interpretation. An inventory was made of the
house at the time of Mr. Cappon's death in 1902, and many of the furnishings
listed are still present in the house.
