INTERESTING... I tried to send some mission statements attached, and the
group is not configured to send attachments of the MS Word variety. Can
anyone enlighten me on this?

Anyway, below is my original message, plus the mission statements
copy-pasted. I apologize for the long mail...

You are in luck!

We just went through this process with our board (we underwent a name
change, too!) Many bigger budget museums go to private consultants and
marketing firms and do major analysis for this sort of thing. When you are
small, you go to the ASTC convention, sit it on every session you can on the
subject, then come back and do it yourself.

What I've attached is a list of mission statements we liked for various
reasons, then our final results. We of course wanted a simple and to the
point one-liner that said explained what we did. This was no easy task
(thank the gods I married an English major!!) We realized that we truly
needed a simple mission and a simple philosophy that we could use equally.
All the other explanations people want to stick in their missions can be
stated as "goals".

FYI- I'm not ashamed to admit that we basically stole some ideas from other
statements we liked. Is it possible to plagiarize a mission statement? ha,
ha.

We are very happy with the results! Hope this helps!

Robyne

PS- I'd love to hear any feedback people have on our results. This was a
very interesting process and I'd love to hear about other's experiences!

Liberty Science Center is an innovative learning resource for lifelong
exploration of nature, humanity and technology, supporting the growth of our
diverse region and promoting informed stewardship of the world.

'The Childrenšs Museum in Boston exists to help children understand and
enjoy
the world in which they live. As an early museum experience for children,
our environment is informal, but our purpose is serious. We want children to
grow up feeling secure and self-confident with respect for others and the
natural world. We encourage imagination, curiosity, questioning and realism;
we provide opportunities for new insights, involvement with the world and
understanding of human differences. Central to our philosophy is the belief
that real objects, direct experiences and enjoyment support learning.'
