The Smithsonian Institution has a huge behind-the-scenes volunteer program,
in addition to a volunteer docent program. My office alone has more than 20
volunteers, some of whom have been with us more than 15 years. I have one
volunteer who comes in daily, except for vacations, and attends staff
meetings, workshops, etc., along with the regular staff. I even have two
"field" volunteers who photograph in far-flung corners of the world (although
because they never come to the office, getting them to report their hours to
the volunteer office has become a bit of a chore).

I'll be happy to answer any specific questions.
