Hello Paul,

If the cotton cloth is part of the collection I'd recommend speaking with a conservator, a textile or potentially paper conservator if one is around. They may be able to give you some hints or may recommend some more specialised treatment in a lab. Either would likely have experience working with adhesives/glues/pastes. You mention it's mucilage based but there might be the potential of something else mixed in there. Combine that with the potential for something to react with the textile (colours, etc.) and a consult may be worth it.

                Good luck.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Mucilage Removal

I have a piece of cotton cloth that has been attached to a cardboard backing with mucilage adhesive. The glue is extremely old and crusty and was apparently very heavily applied. I need suggestions on safe removal. I doubt water will touch the dried glue. Are there any solvents that might be safe or should I try a dry removal?
