National Law Enforcement Museum (NLEOMF.org) Job Description

Position:  Child and Youth Educator (contract position)

Employment:  March-June 2011

Compensation: $5,000 upon project completion

Reports to:  Senior Director of Museum Programs

Position Summary:

The National Law Enforcement Museum is hiring a part-time, Child and Youth Educator.  He/she will have as the focus of his/her work the development child-centered safety and awareness programs as outlined in a Domestic Violence Prevention grant.  He/she will also implement child/youth-centered kIDsafe components for evaluation purposes, in accordance with identified outcomes and benchmarks.  This is a contract position ending in June 2011.

Duties and Responsibilities:


*         Develop and find child-centered safety and awareness curriculum that will enable children (ages 4-12) to: recognize when it is important to go for help; know where to seek help; identify attributes of healthy relationships and methods of appropriate communication; and use strategies to escape violence and help peers to do the same, etc.

*         Present kIDsafe program components to audiences for evaluation purposes, educating children about safety topics and youth (ages 12-17) about issues related to teen-dating violence

*         Develop activities to enable families to communicate about issues related to safety and awareness

*         Collaborate with staff to find audiences to test components of the kIDsafe program for evaluation purposes

*         Support the process of submitting quarterly grant reports

*         Communicate with members of the community to expand the Museum's reach and reputation, and promote the programs among social service agencies, non-profit organizations, educators, museums and law enforcement professionals

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:


*         Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Child Development, or a related field.  Master's Degree preferred

*         Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum for childhood education- i.e.: ability to create age- and stage-appropriate curriculum for children, preferably those in racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse urban communities

*         Demonstrated experience teaching children and youth, including effective teaching methods, strong classroom management skills, and creative approaches to engaging children and youth

*         Knowledge of safety and awareness-related topics for children

*         Knowledge of teen-dating violence, and related issues

*         Knowledge of best practices in the presentation of sensitive content to audiences of children and youth, ages 4-17

*         Ability to relate to children and youth, 4-17 years of age

*         Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; excellent judgment; ability to work individually and in a team setting

*         Ability to meet deadlines

*         Flexibility and sense of humor

*         Ability to work well with parents

*         Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and internet research

*         Pass a background check

*         Bilingual English-Spanish speaker preferred


Working Conditions:

*         Work may take place at the downtown Washington, DC office and at home, depending on assignment

*         Availability to teach kIDsafe components during occasional evenings or Saturdays for program evaluation purposes

*         Limited travel may be required
