The Schenectady County Historical Society is hiring two creative, flexible,
and enthusiastic individuals with an interest in public history and museums
and a commitment to excellent visitor services for the positions of
Education Intern and Collections Intern.

Applications will be accepted until April 6, 2015. Required start date is
week of May 26, 2015.

*Education Internship Description*

The Education Intern will work to develop and update the education programs
of the Schenectady History Museum located in Schenectady and the Mabee Farm
Historic Site in Rotterdam Junction. The Education Intern will present
school programs, develop lesson plans for both on site and outreach
programs, and plan an education day targeted to homeschool families. The
intern may also be asked to develop educational components for exhibits or
to assist staff with the planning and implementation of educational
activities during special events. Successful candidates should have or be
pursuing a degree in history, art history, museum studies, education or a
related field, must be comfortable interacting with the public and with
children, and must have excellent time management skills.

At the completion of their internship, the Education Intern will have
accomplished a project in their area of focus (education) and will also
understand how all of the areas overlap within the wide variety of tasks
required of the staff at a historical society. The intern will participate
in a weekly discussion seminar based on assigned readings. Additionally,
the intern will go behind-the-scenes with 3-5 study trips to regional
museums.

The Education Intern will also be involved in many aspects of the Society’s
operations, and can expect to work hands-on in a variety of capacities at
SCHS, including:

   - Providing guided tours
   - Assisting with special events and programs
   - Assisting in the gift shop
   - Feeding goat and sheep
   - Exhibit design, research, and development, and installation
   - Updating social media
   - Assisting with daily operational tasks as needed

The Education Intern will be expected to work 35 hours/week
Tuesday-Saturday for a twelve-week period beginning on Tuesday, May 26 and
ending on Saturday, August 15.  Some evening work may be required. The pay
rate is $10.00/hour. Housing is not provided, and the intern must have
transportation.

*Collections Internship Description*

The Collections Intern will work with the collections of the Schenectady
History Museum located in Schenectady and the Mabee Farm Historic Site in
Rotterdam Junction. Under the supervision of the Curator, the Collections
Intern will document, process, inventory, photograph, and store  a wide
variety of artifacts, including paintings, furniture, household goods, and
farm tools. The Collections Intern will also assist with the development of
exhibits, and will research and write artifact-based articles for the SCHS
newsletter. Successful candidates should have or be pursuing a degree in
history, art history, museum studies, or a related field, must be willing
to take initiative, and will be highly organized, have excellent computer
skills, and be comfortable interacting with the public. Basic knowledge of
PastPerfect software and artifact handling is helpful but not required.
