Dear Friends:

The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington has produced a free
educational poster to commemorate Jewish American Heritage Month (May) and
the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel. The 36" x 24" poster
highlights the Washington Jewish community's celebration outside the Jewish
Agency building on Massachusetts Avenue on May 14, 1948. Following the
declaration of Israel's independence and President Truman's swift
recognition of the State, the gathered crowd sang, prayed, and danced.

Educational resources for teachers and students in grades 5-12 (including
primary source documents, discussion guides, and background information)
will be available on our website (
http://jhsgw.org/education/jahm_resources.php) soon. They focus on the
importance of teen social activism both then and now, and the role that
Washington area teens played in rallying public support of the new State.
The resources help students relate to the actions and emotions of teens
sixty years ago by analyzing primary source photographs, discussion
questions, oral history excerpts, and historical background. Three suggested
activities help students relate activism in the 1940s to modern causes by
brainstorming ways to advance particular causes, designing protest stickers
and preserving oral histories about important historic events.

The poster and resources will be provided free of cost if folded and mailed
flat. (Up to 5 copies are available for free. Additional copies are
available for $2/poster S&H.) Copies mailed in poster tubes will be
available for $5.

To request a copy of the poster, or if you have any other questions, please
contact me at 202-789-0900 or email [log in to unmask], or 202.789.0900.

Sincerely,

Erin
