From the Promise of Body Spare Parts to Semi-Living Sculptures

CONEY ISLAND, NY. From 1903 to 1943, Dr. Martin Couney exhibited live
premature babies in incubators in Coney Island. The moral implications of
his work are still unclear, but Couney singlehandedly saved the lives of
thousands of children by mixing science with spectacle. Today he is widely
hailed as the "Father of Neonatology".

This weekend only, for the first time in over 50 years, biology and art
will once again be joined in Coney Island. Coney Island USA, Coney
Island's only not-for-profit arts organization is proud to be able to
bring the art of the technological spectacle back to the beaches of New
York City.

On Sunday, May 21, at 4:00PM, the Coney Island Museum kicks off its summer
lecture series with an exclusive engagement. Oron Catts, an artist with
the Tissue Culture & Art Project will give a talk entitled From the
Promise of Body Spare Parts to Semi-Living Sculptures. He will give a
brief history of tissue culture and tissue engineering and the colourful
people who pioneered it, followed by a discussion of TC&A's work.

Coney Island USA is a small arts organization located in the heart of the
amusement area in Coney Island. Merging the nonprofit arts with
entrepreneurial thinking, we're on leading the way with new approaches to
neighborhood revitalization. Our programming includes the country's
largest art parade and the last 10-in-1 circus sideshow in the nation. We
also present the Coney Island Museum, the only museum in the world
dedicated to the history of this important place.

"Ask the Experts" is our summer lecture series, offered on Sunday
afternoons in the museum.
