As Benjamin Franklin wisely wrote, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The ounce of prevention for history organizations begins with identifying potential threats to visitors, paid and unpaid staff, collections, historic structures, and the organization’s reputation and future existence.
Risk management is about taking steps to reduce, monitor or eliminate those potential threats including safety and health issues, security breaches, weak internal controls, equipment failure, loss of key staff or volunteers, and of course, natural and man-made disasters.

Join us for this two-part StEPs Lab webinar series to learn how your organization can monitor, reduce or eliminate risks that can severely impact your organization. The webinars are sponsored by the American Association for State and Local History’s StEPs program. Organizations do not have to be enrolled in StEPs to take part in the webinars.

All organizations, no matter their budget or paid/unpaid staff size, should understand the importance of risk management and what they can do to begin working on a risk management plan.

The target audience for this webinar series is small- (including all-volunteer) and mid-sized organizations.

We highly recommend participation in both webinars. Organizations cannot move ahead to the development of an emergency plan (covered in Part Two) without a clear-eyed understanding of the areas where their institution is most vulnerable to loss and damage.

Part One on Wednesday, January 20th will introduce the process of assessing your organization’s risks, address a variety of hazards, and offer recommendations for tools and resources you may want to use in starting the risk management process. Part Two presented on Wednesday, January 27th will focus on collections-specific hazards and offer tips and resources for developing an emergency preparedness and response plan.

Registration for each webinar is $40 per login for AASLH members ($115 non-members). One login allows an unlimited number of participants to take part in the webinar from one computer. Organizations enrolled in the StEPs program pay only $25 for each webinar by obtaining the special promo code from the StEPs Community website.
