EXHIBITS GRAPHIC DESIGNER

DESCRIPTION

The Exhibits Graphic Designer is responsible for the graphic and three dimensional design of the exhibits as well as other institutional visual materials at the Newseum. Under the direction of the Director of Exhibit Design, the Exhibits Graphic Designer:


*         Designs visually dynamic, detailed and highly organized interpretive graphic materials using InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator


*         Creates documents that explain the arrangement of three-dimensional space using Vectorworks



*         Details fabrication drawings for the Newseum's Exhibit Services group as well as outside contractors using Vectorworks



*         Creates three-dimensional models to be used as problem solving tools and as presentation tools to non-designers


*         Produces mount making instructional drawings for contractors hired by the Collections team



*         Creates three-dimensional models to be used as problem solving tools and as presentation tools to non-designers



*         Expresses ideas both visually and verbally to colleagues within the department of Exhibits and Programs as well as to a broad range of other Newseum departments and employees



*         Works as part of a team with exhibit writers, editors, curators, collections and visual resources specialists and fabricators, as well as video and interactive designers and producers



*         Designs and maintains the wayfinding system as well as a variety of institutional graphic needs



*         Designs, produces and installs cut vinyl as needed throughout the building



*         Designs, produces and installs graphic marketing materials that support current and upcoming exhibits



*         Designs and produces immediate and  impromptu graphics in response to First Amendment events and issues



*         Plays a key role in maintaining the appearance of existing exhibits as well as restocking depleted materials as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS


*         Bachelor's degree or equivalent, with 2-3 years of experience with both 2D and 3D design


*         Expertise in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop


*         Experience with Vectorworks or similar CAD program or some familiarity with a sincere desire to learn


*         Demonstrated ability to creatively and intelligently solve complex problems in a visual way



*         Ability to think in three dimensions and conceptualize and execute detailed production drawings for exhibit fabrication and mount making



*         Ability to communicate design ideas both verbally and through visual aids such as renderings or models


*         Strong talent and skill in the many aspects of graphic design and the ability to be creative within the Newseum brand



*         Experience with cut vinyl production and vinyl application is a plus


*         Self motivated work ethic and ability and desire to work as part of a team



*         Ready and able to switch gears and take on new projects with imminent deadlines as necessary



*         Sincere interest in history, journalism and the First Amendment
