2 Research Assistants (History of Science & Archaeology)

The Virtual Teaching Collection (VTC) research project, based in the
University of Cambridge and including participants from the
Universities of Glasgow, London, Oxford and Middlesex, will explore
methods and develop material for the visualisation of objects of
material culture. The project is seeking an archaeologist and an history
of scientific instruments to act as content specialist in the development
of an image database for use in artefact-based teaching. In
collaboration with curators, visual designers, and software engineers,
the team's content specialists will have an opportunity to contribute
fundamentally to the advancement of humanities computing methods
and computer assisted teaching.
The successful candidate will have as minimum skills and experience:
*       A graduate degree (or equivalent) with a speciality in British
        archaeology and/or technology (archaeology) or history of
        scientific instruments (history of science), with preference given
        to those candidates with both general knowledge as well as a
        period speciality;
*       Teaching experience, with preference given to those candidates
        with a strong interest in material culture studies and experience
        in curriculum development;
*       Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a
        team.
A candidate having, in addition to the above, familiarity with or
experience in the use of microcomputer/workstation systems would
be in a superior position.
The appointment will be available from 1 July 1994 for two years, with
renewal contingent upon further funding. The salary scale is 13,000 -
15,000 a year.
