PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP
Caring for the Historic Site: Assessing Needs and Implementing Solutions
(co-sponsored by the NIC)

Pasadena, CA -- The public is invited to join museum professionals from
across California in Pasadena, CA July 17 & 18 for the California Association
of Museums’ (CAM) Annual Conference, Learning from the Past to Shape the
Future.  The Conference has been designed to provide all participants with
the opportunity to encounter and explore timely and important topics facing
all museums in California and to meet and interact with their colleagues from
throughout the state.  Participants of all areas of operations and types of
museums (from small to large) will find relevant information and stimulating
content.  A special track for small to mid-sized museums has been designated.

Day one includes a wide range of topics perennial to the museum field
including Growing to Meet the Future: Pitfalls and Rewards of Museum
Expansion; Best Practices: Successful Marketing Partnerships; Financial Self
Sufficiency for Non-Profit Organizations; and Historic Site Museums: Concerns
& Issues.  Day two continues with Packaging and Pitching Museums to the
Tourism Market; Alluring Labels; Exhibition Design for the Child in All of
Us; and 15 Proven Fund-raising Techniques for Small to Mid-sized Museums and
Historical Societies.

Featured speakers include:  National figure, Edward H. Ables, Jr., President
& CEO of the American Association of Museums, who will give the keynote
address and presentation at the Directors’ Luncheon Forum.

The Pre-Conference Workshop, Care of the  Historic Site: Assessing Needs and
Implementing Solutions, co-sponsored by the National Institute for the
Conservation of Cultural Property (NIC), will take place at the Southwest
Museum and Casa de Adobe, Los Angeles.  It is intended for site
administrators, professionals from small to medium-sized museums and
individuals responsible for or interested in conservation services for
historic buildings and their contents.  Conservators and architects will
advise participants of low-tech, low-budget temporary solutions, as well as
conservation techniques for the long term.

Conference attendees will have time to experience Pasadena as a model of
cultural tourism.  The opening receptions is scheduled for the Lummis Home/
El Alisal, headquarters of the Historical Society of So. CA, and the Heritage
Square Museum, home of eight historic buildings.  A progressive reception and
dinner will take place in the garden of the historic Gamble House and within
the neighboring Fenyes Mansion, home of the Pasadena Historical Museum.  The
Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens is the site for the
twilight closing reception.  The conference hotel is the DoubleTree, 191 N.
Los Robles, in Old Town Pasadena.  Reservations should be made directly by

Conference registration fees are:  CAM members (before June 15) $215; CAM
members (after June 15) $250; nonmembers (by June 15) $250; nonmembers (after
June 15) $285; Single Day Passes $165 (CAM members ) and $180 (nonmembers);
full-time students with ID $100.  Pre-Conference Workshop: CAM members
(before June 15) $75; CAM members (after June 15) and nonmembers $90.
