I look at both equally, especially for applicants just graduating college.

One factor that can hurt recent graduates with internships (and less often volunteering) in the job hunt is the duration of each internship (which is generally short).  Be conscious of how that reflects in potential employers minds.  They are judging how likely you are to stick around for the long run.  If you have a 10 week internship somewhere, I would suggest listing it on your resume as a set 10 week internship with "set" being the key word.  Otherwise, it can be misinterpretted that you left after that short amount of time on your own volition, and that might make your less desirable.

Good luck in your search.  If you are still in Maryland, feel free to email me off list serve and I can pass along anything I hear about.

I do look for volunteer and intern experience but I also look to see what computer programs you know.  If you know museum databases like PastPerfect or anyother that is a big thing for me along with Adobe programs like Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator. since we do all of our exhibits in house.
