WASHINGTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Washington County Historical Society is searching for a new Executive Director to lead the Society into the future.
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the daily operations of the Society, supervision of staff, and is responsible for fundraising for operational support and events. This position supervises a professional staff and approximately 100 volunteers working with four locations in West Bend Wisconsin. 
Duties also include, working with the Board and Staff on budgeting and financial supervision and being responsible for operations, goal setting and strategic planning, grant writing, and all aspects of Society business at each of its Historic locations. 

Qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least five years management experience supervising employees with profit & loss responsibility. Advanced degree and experience in the not-for-profit segment is desired. 

The Executive Director is an Employee of the Washington County Historical Society, Inc.  The Executive Director is required to follow the WCHS Bylaws, comply with and enforce the policies set by the WCHS Board of Directors, and carry out all other duties as assigned by the WCHS President or Board of Directors.
The Executive Director position is an Exempt Full-Time position requiring at least 40 (forty) hours of work per week.

Duties and Responsibilities
1.   Responsible for the overall administration of the WCHS and all its daily operations.
2.  Work closely with the Board of Directors to formulate policies and develop long-range plans.
3.  Work on or with staff in the areas of acquisitions, education, and research.
4.  Public relations and Development.
5.  Assist in coordinating WCHS Board of Directors meetings.
6.  Direct appropriate employees to assist in planning and coordinating the work of WCHS committees.
7.  Insure that professional standards govern WCHS operations as they pertain to acquisitions, preservation, research, 
interpretation, and presentation.
8.  Work closely with the Policy Committee to oversee the general care of all WCHS facilities.
9.  Work with the WCHS Treasurer and Executive Assistant to insure sound accounting practices are employed and to monitor the annual and any special budgets.
10.  Work with the Board of Directors, committee chairs and Employees to prepare budgets and present them to the Board of Directors for approval and County Board Culture & Education Liaison committee.
11.  Work on fundraising activities for annual operations and Foundation and any “special” funding drives and activities.
12.  Preparation and application for and administration of grants and donations from government agencies, private foundations, corporations and individuals.
13.  Maintain a log of specific projects and activities to be reviewed on at least an annual basis with the WCHS President and Personnel Committee.
14.  Represent WCHS at professional, civic and social events, conventions, and public gatherings in order to strengthen relationships with cultural and civic leaders.  These duties include active participation in public speaking engagements and lectures and serving as the WCHS general spokesperson.
15.  Work with the staff to insure consistent and professional public relations practices are being employed.
16.  Oversee the efforts and activities of the WCHS paid employees and volunteers.
17.  Develop and present budget requests and required reports to the county board or the appropriate county board committees.
18.  Solely responsible for selecting, disciplining and terminating employees.  The Executive Director is encouraged to seek the advice and consent of the Board of Directors, WCHS President, the Personnel Committee and other ad-hoc committees.
19.  Conduct regular performance evaluations (at least annual) of each Regular Employee.
20.  Make regular reports of employee related actions to the Personnel Committee and the Board of Directors.
21.  Recommend to the Board of Directors all salary and benefit adjustments for employees.
22.  Work with employees to insure they maintain a professional attitude and continue to efficiently and effectively serve the WCHS.
