Nydia,

We rolled our large rugs on 10" dia. Sonotubes covered with Marvelseal,
then covered them with muslin. The ends of the tubes set on custom
built supports (nothing fancy, just u-shaped plywood on feet) on our
longest shelving units. The rugs range from 9'x12' to 15'x17'. Roll
them with the face of the rug facing out.

The hardest part was finding a clear/clean space to put them in order to
vacuum, photograph, etc. and then roll. We used this as a learning
opportunity for a collections management class, so we had lots of help
in rolling and putting away.

While this isn't completely ideal storage, it was very inexpensive and
is much better than before (folded or rolled on small acidic tubes).

If you'd like more info, please free to contact me.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Textile Storage Equipment

Good Morning,

My name is Nydia and I am an intern at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
(Vizcaya for short) in Miami, FL. I am currently assisting in the
Collections and Curatorial Sciences Department at Vizcaya on a
Textile Storage Project.

Vizcaya has large textiles such as carpets, rugs and tapestries that
we are to roll on tubes covered in acid-free tissue paper, then wrap
in muslin and tie with twill tape. They are to be stored in an
environmentally friendly area and I was wondering if anyone had ever
had to store large scale textiles before? What were your methods?
Were there specific racks used for storing them? Are there any
specific companies that stand out?

Any information regarding the storage of textiles would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you for your time,

Nydia
