As an artist, I've charged borrowers as much as $2000 loan fees to cover the
costs of handling and doing condition reports on returned work. If a certain
"installation" artwork is made up of many parts (some of my works have a few
thousand parts), one could go broke paying for extra hired help to check the
works for damages, missing pieces, doing photo documentation, inventory, etc.
I don't charge loan fees just for the sake of lending a work, but it's
reasonable (if not crucial!) to request that these additional costs be
covered by a borrower, especially when extra staffing is needed to manage the
details.
