We have two paintings of western scenes that were probably created in the
mid 1970s in our holding. We would like to remove them from our holdings.
They were never accessioned. We don't know how they came to us. We don't
know anything about the artist other than that he signed as, "Candhaley."
I've emailed about 1/2 dozen galleries specializing in Western art, and the
responses have been, "never heard of the artist." A few months ago, I've
even approached a museum whose collection revolves around this type of
subject matter but have not received any responses as yet.
I would be more than grateful to receive any advice or direction as to how I
can find:
1] How can I find any information about the artist?
2] We would like to donate them to a museum, but if these works are not
significant, can we auction them? Are there any ethical/programmatic
ramifications?
3] What would you do if you were given the same situation?
Thanks so much,
Ellen
