Do we know where Mrs. Wood lived or where Frank R. Wood is from? It seems likely the Chicago area, but knowing more specifically might help local museums around Chicago determine if they are interested in the letter.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] 1869/1871 Indian War letter and document available

We have a letter and document that we would like to transfer to a relevant museum. The letter is dated November 1869 from Albert Longley to "Mrs. Wood" confirming that her son Frank R. Wood had enlisted in the Army. The document is on parchment and headed "The Commanding Officer of the Fifteenth Regiment of the U.S. Infantry" recording Frank R. Wood's promotion to Sergeant of Company A, 15th Regiment, US Infantry in 1871. The letter has separated into two pieces along a fold line, but is in otherwise good condition. Images are available upon request to those interested.

Transcript of the letter:

Chicago, Ill Nov. 8th 1869

Mrs. Wood,

Today I went to the Recruiting Office and ascertained that Frank had enlisted for five years in the regular Army and arrived at Fort Leavenworth Kansas last Saturday. Where he is liable they told me to be ordered to the front at any time and fight the Indians. He was a very foolish boy and will repent it many times before his term of service is out. Thinking you might wish to know for a certainty I ascertained and enclose you his Orders as I got it from the recruiting officer.

I am, Very Resp.
Albert Longley
