Paul,
  Many archaeologists, (myself included), have turned to library work. An MLS
is not hard to acquire (takes a couple of years of graduate school), and you
can work in either museum libraries or whatever type of library you might be
interested in. My husband has had his Ph.D. in Anthropology since 1991, and
still has not been offered an academic position.
