Katherine,

It is amazing to me the people who get involved with museums. To me, individuals like this should be encouraged to find an alternate volunteer position that they may find closer to their interests in advancing the cause of the organization.

I have two members of my Board, one of whom is the President, who have regularly encouraged me to throw out accessioned items relevant to the community because they look 'junky'.

I have a copy of the ethics of our national association immediately beside my desk. I find myself constantly referring them to these ethics as support for what our public trust relationship is with the community.

It is indeed the responsibility of the board to ensure that there is a business plan, and be part of ensuring that the resources are available for you to be able to execute the business plan. If this individual wants to be part of the development of a business plan that meets the needs of the community in a more comprehensive way, he should be encouraged to meet not only the expenditures of the organization, but the income end.

Cheers

Darryl
