*SOUTHERN HISTORY AND LITERATURE - CENTRAL LIBRARY*

*_DESCRIPTION_*

The Southern History and Literature Department is responsible for one of 
the largest historical collections to be found in a public library in 
the state of Alabama. The collection includes rare materials, diaries, 
family genealogies, a vibrant vertical file and other items that record 
and highlight the history of Birmingham and Alabama. This position 
involves performing a wide range of professional library work including 
but not limited to public service, collection development and 
supervising personnel. Strong collection-based selection and collection 
management skills are required. Work is performed at the Central Library 
of the Birmingham Public Library under the general supervision of the 
Public Services Coordinator. Work is reviewed through conferences and on 
the basis of results achieved. The Southern History and Literature 
Department patrons include school age children, teens, adults, 
researchers and genealogists.

*_MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES_*

· Responsible for the daily administration of the department by 
reviewing work assignments, work load assessment, utilization of 
resources, training, development and performance of personnel.

· Performs all phases of collection development/maintenance to include 
evaluating the collection, selecting and purchasing materials, 
retention, evaluation, and deselection.

· Prepares departmental budget recommendations and manages budget in a 
timely and efficient manner; prepares various departmental reports, 
documents and correspondence; maintains departmental statistics and 
personnel records.

· Planning and implementation of digital library initiatives and online 
content with a focus on access.

· Supervises Central library operations when assigned and when the 
coordinator is absent to include performing opening and closing 
procedures and monitoring/directing library operations.

· Attends various administrative meetings; implements and interprets 
policies/procedures relative to department staff; prepares 
recommendations for operation or service improvements.

· Plans, develops, schedules, publicizes and implements various special 
programs and fund-raisers to promote the library materials and services. 
Implements delivery of research and reference services to the community 
and visiting scholars, oversight for preparation and assembly of exhibits.

· Represents the Birmingham Public Library System by participating in 
local/state associations and serving on various committees. Outreach to 
the community including public speaking engagements.

· Performs other related work as required.

· Knowledge and practice of good customer service skills and ability to 
establish cordial and effective relationships with associates and patrons.

· Knowledge of supervisory and administrative principles and practices

· Excellent analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills and high 
proficiency in speaking, reading and writing the English language

· Demonstrated ability in special collections based on education and/or 
work in a special collections environment.

· Demonstrated knowledge of genealogical research and resources.

· Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects.

    * Demonstrated ability to develop research materials which provide
      effective access to collections, especially in electronic/digital
      formats.
    * Demonstrated productive activity in digitization of materials.
    * Demonstrated productive activity in the creation and/or
      maintenance of Web-based collections.
    * Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory and practice.

· Knowledge of and experience with computers and various computer 
software applications, peripherals, online databases, online searching, 
and the Internet.

· Knowledge of the various resources available to locate information and 
materials throughout a library system or network of libraries.

· Knowledge of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, OCLC books format, 
Library of Congress subject headings and classification systems, and 
Dewey Decimal Classification Schedules.

· Knowledge of library circulation, acquisition and cataloging 
procedures; skill in interpreting guidelines and explaining procedures 
to staff to ensure compliance.

· Experience in managing a materials budget for print and non-print 
resources.

· Experience in web design or publishing to promote programs and 
collections on the library’s website.

· Skill in assisting patrons and staff by referencing information and 
locating materials.*_ _*

· Skill in preparing and maintaining various departmental reports, 
records and documents to include compiling statistics.

· Physical requirements include the ability to stand for long periods of 
time; the ability to maneuver loaded book trucks weighing at least 100 
pounds; eyesight sufficient to read and understand information from 
microforms and PC monitors, and the manual dexterity necessary for the 
regular use of PCs; ability to stoop, twist, turn and move materials 
from place to place in the library.

*_MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND BENEFITS_*

Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program is 
required and an undergraduate history degree is preferred. Minimum of 
three years library experience working in a supervisory function is 
required. Grade 25 with annual beginning salary ranging from 
$44,928-$49,628. All positions may include morning, afternoon, evening 
and weekend hours, including Sunday. Employees may be required to adapt 
to future schedule and location changes depending on library needs.
