Collections Internship





        Please Touch Museum, the Children s Museum of Philadelphia, is seeking

interns for Summer, 1999.  Founded in 1976, PTM emphasizes play as an

introduction to the humanities for children ages 1-7.  The Museum collects
artifacts

reflecting the history of American childlife, specifically in the Delaware
Valley area since 1945.


        Notable collections include; the Savery Collection, documenting five
generations of

toys from a single family;  the Spivak Star Wars Collection; and the
Contemporary Toy

Collection which represents annually-determined top-selling toys for children
seven and

under.  Current exhibits on the work of Maurice Sendak, music,
transportation and

others will be joined this summer by a new permanent exhibit based on Lewis
Carroll s Alice inWonderland.



        During a 10-week unpaid internship, interns will play a vital role in

preparing the collections for a move to our new 120,000 square foot facility
by;



Initiating an inventory of collections;
Updating records to reflect new, more accurate, collections data;

Processing, and maintaining records for, accessions, deaccesssions and loans;

Providing minor on-site conservation;

Corresponding with manufacturers, donors and others;

Working with Department of Exhibits to install and maintain exhibits; and

Completing other duties as assigned



Successful candidates will have experience with museum collections, computer

literacy, independent and team work and strong communication skills.
Preference will

be given to graduate students in museum/cultural studies, history, American
studies and anthropology programs.
