The Image Permanence Institute is pleased to announce that it will be accepting application for its third annual Digital Print Workshop to be held 22-25 October, 2015 at our facilities at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
The workshop is designed especially for library, archive, and museum collection care professionals responsible for the long-term preservation of digitally-printed materials including books, documents, photographs, fine art, ephemera, etc.

Who should apply: Curators, registrars, archivists, conservators, librarians, catalogers, and collection managers responsible for the long-term preservation of digitally-printed materials. Conservators in private practice are also welcome to attend.

Content: Under the definitions specifically created for IPI's Digital Print Preservation Portal Project (DP3 project), this workshop will deal with electrophotographic prints (laser prints/Xerographic prints/EP), dye sub prints (dye sublimation prints/dye diffusion thermal transfer prints/D2T2 prints) and inkjet prints (Giclée/Iris print/"archival pigment print"). Electrophotographic prints and inkjet prints will be dealt with both as photographic objects (or photo-like objects) and graphic documents.
The workshop topics include:

  *   What is a digital print?
  *   The history of digital printing
  *   The technologies behind the most popular digital printing devices
  *   The variety of digital print formats
  *   How to identify digital print types through swatch books, identified samples, and unknown samples. Exercises will be used to reinforce lessons.
  *   Types of deterioration through demonstrations, lectures, and class discussion with some examples from IPI's collection.
  *   Recommended best practices based on IPI's most recent research
  *   Naming conventions
At the conclusion of the workshop, each student will receive a binder with all class handouts as well as print sample sets to take home.


Tuition: Due to a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, there is no cost for tuition, notebooks, supplies or samples. However, participants will be responsible for travel, lodging, and meals.

Application: Since attendance is limited to 15 participants, we are asking that applications be submitted for consideration.

Attendees will be selected based on order of receipt as well as the need for a diversity of institution types, institutional roles, and geographic representation. Early application is highly recommended.
