2012 Summer Internship at the Sam Noble Museum

The Department of Mammalogy at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History is seeking one intern for Summer 2012. The internship will provide practical experience, first-hand knowledge, and a broad exposure to museum work in a dynamic natural history collection. The intern will work under the guidance of the Curatorial Staff to assist with collection management activities related to the curation, digitization, and integration of an orphaned mammal collection of about 23,000 specimens. The intern also will focus on best practices in natural history collections management and care. The primary objective will involve gathering information via other professional websites and publications to create a centralized location for currently available information about current best practice topics. The information will be assimilated for posting on the resources web page of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections.

The 12-week internship, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation will begin in May 2012 and end in August 2012. The position is full-time (40 hours per week) at $15 per hour for a total salary compensation of $7,200. Deadline for applications is 29 February 2012.

Applicants must be currently enrolled as a graduate student in a museum studies program, and should submit a cover letter, resumé, a letter of support from their advisor, and a one-page essay indicating why they are interested in an internship in the Sam Noble Museum’s Collection of Mammals and how it will benefit their career development.
