Personally- without wanting to sound anti-social, I enjoy going to
museums alone- as I like to read EVERYTHING and take my time, and maybe
get to visit with some staff. Few of my friends would want to tag along
for that sort of busman's holiday!

Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Men on walk-in tours

I'm house manager for a historic house museum in Virginia with annual
visitation between 40,000-50,000. We frequently get solo female as well
as solo male visitors, and I would guess that we have more of the former
than the latter. Thinking back on some of these visitors that I've met
personally, I believe most were business people in town for conferences
or seminars and therefore without significant others or readily
available colleagues. Perhaps our location relatively close to a large
metropolitan center makes it more likely for us to have this kind of
solo visitation.

Dear List Members:

I'm curious about your experiences.. At all the museums I've worked at
(all in New Jersey) I can only think of one instance where a solitary
woman came for a 'walk-in' or unreserved tour. Women come in pairs or
groups, but hardly ever alone. Men, however, come in regularly by
themselves, which can pose an interesting problem as a great deal of
museum staffers are women. I can pose some possible reasons for this,
but I was wondering if all of you have had the same experiences or
whether a study has been done about single male v. single female
visitation.

Just curious!
