You should check out Ellen Carrlee’s blog posting on labeling object. She does not address taxidermy specifically but covers similar materials and tricky labeling job.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Marking Taxidermy
Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me as google is proving to be no help today! We are prepping for an upcoming exhibit and would like to mark a large group of mammals and ornithological specimens that currently only have storage labels. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to mark object id's on critters?
Thanks in advance,
Beth
