I'd also love to hear about how other museums advertise school
programs. We print fliers 3 times a year (Fall, Winter and Spring)
and distribute them to every single public elementary school teacher
in our service area. For the past several years we have been able to
get approval through the public school district to have the fliers
distributed through district mail. We simply bundle them and deliver
them to the district office. This is cheap and easy for us but leaves
all private schools, home schools, pre-schools, etc. out of the loop.
Also, fewer districts are willing to distribute fliers for us so
we're not quite sure how to handle that.

We also do one major direct mailing to everyone in our database at
the start of the school year.

Schools make up about 2/3 of our audience--you can see our program
offerings on our web site (www.explorit.org). We've found that
outreach is becoming increasingly popular due to the increased cost
of buses from field trips and restrictions teachers face. we cannot
meet the demand for our outreach programs.

I'd love to hear how other museums get the word out about their
programs. We've considered attending principal meetings and home
school conferences. What has worked for you?
