Fall 2011 Collections and Curatorial Division Internship

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens preserves the historic estate of American
businessman James Deering, who wintered on the property between 1916 and
1925. Vizcaya exemplifies the epoch in United States history known as
the American Renaissance, when the nation's wealthy industrialists built
lavish estates inspired by the European Renaissance. The
twentieth-century estate is composed of a main house, featuring 34
decorated rooms with antique furnishings and art objects; ten acres of
formal gardens; a native hardwood hammock and mangroves; and a village
complex that once housed domestic staff quarters, a variety of service
functions, and livestock barns. The collection, which was assembled by
James Deering and Paul Chalfin between 1912 and 1916 in Italy, France,
and New York to furnish and decorate Vizcaya, contains artifacts from
ancient times to early twentieth century. Today, Vizcaya is a National
Historic Landmark and public museum accredited by the American
Association of Museums.

The internship offers candidates the opportunity to participate in the
daily functions of the Collections and Curatorial Division as well as
special projects such as the Contemporary Arts Project (CAP), which is a
commission program that invites artists to develop site-specific work
inspired by Vizcaya. CAP is intended to reinvigorate Vizcaya with the
creative dialogue that characterized its foundation, engaging artists
whose practice can establish a dialogue or a critique with the physical
and cultural contexts of the place. The museum encourages students from
all backgrounds to apply and is committed to a culturally diverse work
environment. We are seeking 3 highly motivated interns to begin
