AREA OF CONSIDERATION:   All candidates may apply including individuals with

DUTIES:  The incumbent serves as Manager of the Collections Documentation
Services and is responsible for the management of the National Museum of American
History (NMAH) collections documentation program to ensure the accuracy,
consistency, accessibility of data for collections management, research, and
public programs.  Manages the development and implementation of functional
specifications, documentation standards and standard vocabularies for NMAH's
Collection Information system.  Plans, , coordinates, and implements all aspects of the
program.  Supervises assigned staff including hiring, assigning work,
evaluating performance, and recommending training and awards.  Determines resource
needs and prepares program budgets and spending plans.    In addition, the
incumbent serves on Smithsonian committees that develop institution policies and
procedures related to collections documentation issues and activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:   Applicants must have one year of specialized experience
equivalent to the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is defined as
experience which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge,
skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and which
is typically in or related to the work of the position as described above.

Selective Factors:   (Applicants must meet all of these mandatory
requirements in order to be considered qualified to compete for a position.)

1.  Knowledge of museum cataloging and documentation standards and practices
and the use of terminology and vocabulary standards.
2.  Knowledge of collections information and records management issues and
practices as related to collections documentation.


Quality Ranking Factors:   (These factors are not mandatory to be considered
for a position, but will be used to determine who are the highest qualified
candidates among those who meet the selective factors.)

1.  Knowledge of development and implementation of functional specification
and user requirements for museum collections information systems.
2.  Ability to supervise and direct staff (e.g., hiring, counseling,
rewarding, disciplining, etc.)
3.  Ability to plan, develop, lead, and evaluate museum programs such as
collections documentation.
4.  Knowledge of museum practices and procedures, including those related to
the curatorial, registration and preservation functions.
