Curatorial Intern, Special Exhibitions

The Curatorial Department seeks qualified interns to work on special
exhibition projects. The internship will introduce students to areas of
exhibition planning, development, and implementation of curatorial and
museum practices. Interns will work closely with curators on projects that
match their academic background, skills, and career goals.

Description
The Curatorial Intern will work with the Museum's curators on one of the
following projects:

Valeska Soares (October 30, 2003-February 22, 2004), the first major solo
exhibition of the Brazilian-born, New York-based artist in a museum in the
United States. It features 20 installations, photographs, sculpture, and
video works that the artist made during the last decade; 2 new site-
specific installations; and an accompanying 96 pp. fully illustrated
catalogue. Soares is known for works that incorporate aspects of
conceptual, minimalist, and feminist art practices and for her innovative
use of materials.

Subway Series: The Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Queens Museum of Art
are co-organizing the exhibition Subway Series to be presented
simultaneously at both venues in Summer 2004. Located in close proximity to
one of New York City's Major League baseball stadiums, each museum is
organizing an exhibition about their local baseball team. Designed to
appeal to both viewers of contemporary art and baseball fans, the
exhibition will feature extant and newly commissioned works by artists with
an interest in baseball. Some artworks may be created in response to
legendary moments in the history of the Yankees and Mets and may include
baseball memorabilia as part of artists' installations. Possible topics
include specific players, the stadiums, baseball myths, the integration of
baseball, and the internationalization of Major League Baseball, among
others.

Permanent Collection Catalogue: This major 130-page, fully illustrated
publication will document a selection of works from the Museum's collection
of approximately 400 contemporary works by artists of African, Asian, and
Latin American descent as well as by artists with strong ties to the Bronx.
It will feature a major essay about the development of the collection and
the Museum's innovative interpretative initiatives based on the collection.

The intern will assist the curators with research on artists, artworks, and
exhibition-related themes and issues; compiling artist biographies,
bibliographies, and slide documentation; and developing interpretive
materials for the exhibition. Intern will also assist with general clerical
task in the department.

Applications accepted from college juniors and seniors; recent graduates;
and graduate students in art history (contemporary art concentration
preferred), arts administration, museum or curatorial studies, or related
field. Interns must be articulate, self-motivated, and detail-oriented with
strong research, writing, and computer skills and an ability to work on
multiple projects. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

Internship is unpaid. Interns must be available to work two days a week
minimum.

Academic credit or Work-Study may be arranged for the intern at the
discretion of her/his school.

Procedures
There is no application form. A typed application should include the
following:

1. Name, home and school address, and telephone numbers.
2. Full resume of education and employment history.
3. A cover letter describing past museum experience and reason for applying
