You didn't mention whether you needed software for an IBM- or a 
Mac-compatible system.  A number of good programs are available for 
either, but the top-of-the-line softwares have been type-specific.

Just make sure that your genealogy program is "GEDCOM" compatible.  That 
ensures that your data can be transferred from one program to 
another--crucial in upgrading or trading information.

All of the suggestions so far meet that criteria.  And I don't think 
you'll find any GEDCOM software that's limited to ascendancy.

One of the Jewish Genealogy Society publications recently had a terrific 
article summarizing different software options.  I think it was the 
Philadelphia society, in their publication CHRONICLES.  Let me know if
