Job Announcement
Museum Education Manager
The Society of the Cincinnati, Anderson House - Washington, D.C.

The Society of the Cincinnati, a nonprofit historical and educational organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., seeks a full-time museum education manager to be responsible for the daily management of public visitor programs at Anderson House, the Gilded Age mansion and historic house museum that has been the Society's headquarters since 1938. The major aspects of this work are managing the museum tour and docent programs and the Society's public programs.

The Society strives to increase museum visitation significantly and improve the visitor experience in the coming years and intends to expand museum hours as soon as professional and volunteer staffing will permit. Currently, the museum receives approximately 11,000 visitors for tours and public programs each year. Building the volunteer corps and overseeing this extension of public hours will be one of the chief responsibilities of the museum education manager, who will supervise a part-time museum visitor services coordinator in this work. The museum education manager will also be charged with assuming a leading role in growing the Society's public programs-which currently include lectures, concerts, special tours, and children's programs-to present our mission and collections to the public in engaging, creative, and diverse ways.

Founded in 1783, the Society strives to promote knowledge and appreciation of the achievement of American independence. Since 1938 the Society has maintained its headquarters at and worked to preserve and interpret Anderson House, a 1905 Beaux-Arts mansion and National Historic Landmark in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. For more information, visit www.societyofthecincinnati.org<http://www.societyofthecincinnati.org>.

Major Duties include:
* recruiting, training, and managing a team of volunteer docents to lead tours of Anderson House
* developing methods for evaluating docents and rewarding exemplary service
* planning periodic docent enrichment events
* overseeing the daily operations of the museum tour program
* maintaining and revising, as necessary, the museum tour manual
* recruiting and scheduling group tours
* contributing to efforts to promote and increase museum visitation
* recording and analyzing visitor attendance statistics
* assuming a leading role in a staff group to develop, promote, and evaluate public programs
* coordinating day-of program logistics

Qualifications:
A Master's degree in museum education, museum studies, history, American studies, or a closely related field is preferred. A Bachelor's degree is required. At least three to five years of professional experience working with museum tours, docents, and programs-ideally in a historic house museum-is strongly preferred. A successful candidate will have a demonstrated familiarity with historic house museum interpretation and museum public programs, a strong interest in American history, and experience with docent recruitment and training, crafting a museum tour manual, and developing and promoting new museum programs. Familiarity with the history and material culture of the American Revolution, Washington, D.C., or the Gilded Age is a plus. A successful candidate should be an excellent writer and an effective speaker and should be organized, detail-oriented, comfortable with a variety of computer programs, and capable of working on several projects simultaneously. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required to manage public programs during those times.

Salary and Benefits:
This is a mid-level position on the professional staff of the Society of the Cincinnati with an annual salary in the range of $40,000-$45,000, but salary is negotiable based on experience and demonstrated ability. The Society offers excellent benefits, including annual leave, health insurance, a 401(k) plan, a commuting stipend, and professional development opportunities.
