This may be a little elementary, but, I just have always used the basic 3-d
design principals that I learned way back in art school.  If conservation
is not an issue, though I cannot imagine a case in which it would not be at
least a passing concern, ask a local exhibit tech about what they use to
prop open the book and secure the pages.  I have even used cardboard mock
ups to block out the space in the case and figure out placement.
