Forive the flippancy but when I worked in Exhibits we favored the
development of a cutting lazer that would simply lop off any limbs, digits,
appendages etc. that approached within 6 inches of an object.

As a service, we were going to lable the exhibits with this device to warn
the visitors. Those who don't read the lables would be a disadvantage of
course.  After a few demonstrations people would not only stop fingering
the stuff but might even look at the lable text to find out if they were in
immediate danger.  >;>
